David Kim: Storyteller

(b. 21st November 1996) Denver, Rochester, NYC

Who am I?

… a question of identity, asked by many, complicated by the constant stresses of life.

Born and raised in Denver, I was born to Korean parents who moved to the United States in the 1990’s. Growing up, I spent a lot of time watching movies with my father and sister, often visiting the nearby Century 16 to watch the latest blockbuster releases. Coming from a low income background, film provided an outlet for me to escape everyday life and enter a fictional world where characters learn to overcome their obstacles. My growing interest in film started with an interest in writing fictional narratives, but, as soon as I picked up a used a laptop and Windows Movie Maker, I started making videos.

Despite years of experience in violin, piano, and drawing, I spent my high school and college years writing, shooting, and editing many videos ranging from music performances and video art to short narratives and documentaries. With limited access to classes and equipment, I taught myself using whatever books or online tutorials I had access to. Once I enrolled at the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY), I pursued a BA in both Economics and Film and Media Studies. Here, I learned more about film theory and production while also picking up a keen interest in astronomy, Postmodernism, and entrepreneurship. Eventually, my interests led me to two internships in NYC: Ish Entertainment, a reality TV production house, and Film Movement, a foreign and indie film distribution house.

After graduating from the University of Rochester on 19 May 2019, I moved back to Denver with the hopes of moving to NYC or LA. My production background may be in film, but many of my influences work in other mediums. I am a huge fan of 19th century Russian literature, trap music, history, comic books, and video games. While living in Denver, I plan to refine and master the many skills I picked up in college while writing more stories about mental health, Asian-American identity, and the absurdity in reality.
